If our dogs had a chance to express their thoughts, the warm home, good food, and great companionship we provide them would (or should) be at the top of the list.

The Senior Dogs Project encourages people to adopt older dogs. While puppies tend to be cuter - and are much more popular when people get a dog - older dogs offer many advantages of their own. The SDP offers their top ten list of advantages in adopting an older dog.

1. They are housetrained.
2. They don't chew inappropriately.
3. They've mellowed out.
4. Have learned a lot of the basic commands (maybe even all).
5. They can adjust to a new pack.
6. They are grateful.
7. They have established personalities.
8. They can be instant companions.
9. They can handle time by themselves.
10. They are used to human schedules.

While any dog you get may cause some problems, this is a good list and accurate for most of the older adoptable pets out there.

If you're considering adopting a dog, or know someone who is, take a moment to check out the benefits of getting an older dog.

Any training success stories with dogs who barked too much?

My Maltese is driving me nuts! A close friend requested help with her timid dog that had been acting aggressively. Amigo and I went over there tonight and even though the other dog growled at him at first Amigo remained friendly and they ended up playing! I am so pleased with him being so helpful.

Eye contact

Lately Deuce has been looking at me and then looking at something he wants. Then at me. It's cute - like he's trying to get my attention focused on something. He's always done this for walks (he'll look at the closet door where I keep the leash) but now he's expanded it to his toys and to treats.:w00t:

Loose Leash Recall

I'm so happy. My dog has mastered the loose leash recall. She sneaked out today when my son left the gate open. I saw her heading down the road, called her, and she turned and headed home. It was wonderful.:D

Came When Called

I've been working on training my dog to come when called. We've practiced inside and outside using a long leash. This morning he snuck out (pool guy came to close down the pool but left the gate open). I saw my dog loose in the road so I raced outside and called him, telling him to "Come Here." He came bobbing right over. I was so pleased with him!:D

Learning wave

I'm making good progress - learning how to Wave.
