When it comes to dog training our motivation does not always line up with our goals. We might say that we want our dog to be good or to stop a particular behavior, but our desire to change our own behavior may be weak.

For better or for worse, most dog behavior problems are the result of the combination of his behavior and ours. In an effort to treat our dogs with love, we often allow them to get away with all kinds of "bad" behaviors. This leads to obnoxious habits. Fittingly enough, when our dog occasionally behaves well we are so relieved that we lavish even more praise on him, making the overall problem worse.

When you decide to make changes in your dog's behavior you will benefit from clarifying what it is that you want to fix and then going after the root of the problem. For example, your dog may bark
and dig excessively when he's outside. This is a common problem for dogs that don't get enough exercise. Pent up energy has to be released, so he comes up with his own solution. To fix the behavior you would have to devote more time to walking him. Clearly motivation will be important.

What if you aren't really motivated to change your behavior? Start in smaller increments.:)

If your dog's problem is that he doesn't get enough exercise, the solution is one or two 30 minute walks a day. Well, if you haven't been walking him at all, immediately switching to an hour a day is unlikely to happen. Even if you start, it probably won't last.

Instead of coming up with a big solution, try a more reasonable approach. Our habits build on themselves, so if you begin with smaller, but achievable, goals, then you will not only be on the right path, but you will also strengthen the habit. That way you need much less motivation to achieve your goal. As you become used to walking your dog on a daily basis, you will naturally see improvements in the amount of time you walk him and the positive results that come from it.

So, instead of looking at a big problem with your dog and expecting a big (and immediate) solution from yourself, acknowledge that your motivation to fix the problem may be a little low (that you would really prefer it to just go away) and adjust your plan accordingly. Set smaller goals that are achievable and allow the natural flow of your daily patterns to help you.

dog begging

How do you solve dog begging problems?

dog barking prevention

How can you train a dog so that he doesn't start barking too much to begin with?
