We're getting new neighbors. I have a 2 year old golden who hasn't met a dog he doesn't like. My new neighbor has 2 boxer mixes. We want to get them off on the right foot and avoid any future "fence" disagreements. Is it best to have them meet with the fence in between or on leashes in a neutral area? Do you suggest one at a time introductions?

For an ideal greeting I would have them meet initially on neutral territory and then go for a walk together to a local park. Walking together is a natural way for dogs to bond, plus the excitement of meeting another dog can decrease a little, letting the dogs be calm and collected when they start to interact (not that Goldens or Boxers are prone to becoming too excited...)

After they've walked to the park give them a chance to meet. It's ok to keep them on leash in case they need to be separated, but give them plenty of slack so they can move around and meet each other "politely." And for dogs politely is not face to face, it's more or less the exact opposite.

Both dog owners should avoid giving their dog(s) treats during this time (avoid food issues) and should be careful about what they say and how they say it - stay calm and relaxed.

Meeting with a fence between doesn't necessarily cause any harm, but it being in one's own yard can trigger territorial issues. Once they've met and are getting along it shouldn't be a problem at all.

Sounds like your Golden's got two new buddies on the way. Good luck.
